Squirrels

In Southeastern Indiana, the primary species of squirrels are the Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), the Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger), and the Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus).

The Eastern Gray Squirrel is the most common in urban and suburban areas, with its distinctive gray fur and bushy tail. The Fox Squirrel, larger and often with a mix of reddish or orange fur, prefers more wooded areas but is also found in developed regions. The Eastern Chipmunk is smaller, with its characteristic stripes running down its back, and is typically found in forests, gardens, or yards.

While these squirrels add beauty and charm to the landscape, they can become a nuisance. Squirrels are notorious for raiding bird feeders, chewing on electrical wires, and causing damage to roofing, insulation, and attic structures when they seek shelter in buildings. Their constant gnawing can also harm trees and garden plants. In addition, squirrels can spread diseases like leptospirosis and ticks, further increasing concerns for homeowners.
